Composting

Do you have a fruit or vegetable garden? Do you have a flower enriched landscape around your house? If you answered yes to either of these questions, composting is for you.

Composting is a great way to recycle your yard waste and food scraps. When added to a compost bin with water it will produce a nutrient rich natural fertilizer that you can add to any garden. Composting also reduces methane gas emissions from landfills, lowers your carbon footprint and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.

Composting is fairly easy to do. You need a compost bin, brown material which includes dead leaves, twigs and branches, green material which includes vegetable waste, fruit scraps and coffee grounds and some water. Add these items together in your compost bin and turn the pile from time to time. That’s all that you need to do to compost.

A couple items not to add to a compost bin are dairy products, fats and greases, meat or fish, pet waste and yard trimming treated with chemicals.

In the coming weeks we will be discussing more on composting, including how to build your own compost bin at home.
